Claude Code + DataForSEO Is the Swiss Army Knife for Tactical SEO

- Artificial Intelligence, SEO
Your SEO agent costs about $45 a month
An AI subscription with an API link to DataForSEO, plus any kind of site crawler (even a cheap one like Sitebulb), gives you an SEO agent that takes hours of busywork off your plate every week.

Claude Pro, about $25 of DataForSEO calls and the free Screaming Frog. With Sitebulb Lite it's about $63. Semrush Guru is $249.95 a month.
I've been doing technical SEO for over 15 years, and this is the biggest change to how I work that I've seen. The AI doesn't just suggest what to do anymore. It pulls the data, writes the script, builds the report and hands me something I can ship.
The trick is giving it real data. On its own, an AI knows SEO but can't see a single live SERP or search volume. Connect it to DataForSEO and a crawl of your site, and it can do most of what you'd log into Semrush for, at a fraction of the cost.
What does this look like in practice?
Here are two jobs I ran on October 15, 2026, with the exact prompt, what came back, how long it took and what the API charged.
Find the page that's one push from page one
ranked_keywordspositions 8 to 20$0.019serp/google/organiclive top 10$0.002
59 keywords sit in positions 8 to 20, and every one of them points at a single page: the high-resolution Where's Waldo images post.
- The biggest variations, like "where's wally images" (#8) and "wheres wally pictures" (#9), show 8,100 searches a month each. Google groups close variants, so those overlap and shouldn't be added up.
- The title never says "pictures" or "Wally," the two words most of these searches use.
- The live top 10 is all galleries and image libraries (Shutterstock, Pinterest, Candlewick), so the page's format already fits.
Plus two new sections the data asked for: "hardest Where's Waldo" (ranking 13 to 19) and the beach scene (10 to 17).
Plan a drone photography site from one seed
keyword_suggestions200 rows$0.036
Lesson from the first try: I started with keyword_ideas, which drifted into "pilot flying j" and webcams ($0.048 wasted). keyword_suggestions only returns phrases containing your seed.
KD is the median keyword difficulty for the cluster (0 to 100). The real estate and "near me" pages target 1,900 and 1,600 monthly searches with almost no competition, so they go first.
Both runs used Claude with my DataForSEO account. Times are wall-clock from the first API request to the finished table; add a few minutes to read it over. In Semrush, the same two jobs mean a Position Tracking or Organic Research export, a Keyword Magic Tool session and an afternoon in a spreadsheet.
What is DataForSEO?
It's the raw SEO data, sold by the call, with no subscription.
DataForSEO sells the same kinds of data the big SEO platforms show you (SERPs, search volumes, rankings, backlinks) through an API. You pay as you go: a $50 minimum deposit, no monthly fee, and the balance never expires. There's no dashboard to learn. Claude is the dashboard.
SERP API
Live Google results for any keyword, country or city: rankings, featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews.
Keywords Data
Google Ads search volume, CPC, competition and a 12-month trend for up to 1,000 keywords per call.
DataForSEO Labs
Keyword ideas, what any domain ranks for, organic competitors, keyword gaps and traffic estimates.
Backlinks
Referring domains, anchors, new and lost links for any domain or URL.
On-Page API
Crawl and check pages through the API: tags, status codes, page speed and on-page issues.
AI Optimization
Brand mentions and citations in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity answers, plus AI search volume.
Prices from DataForSEO, its SERP and AI Optimization pricing pages, and Ryan Doser's review. Since July 2026, Backlinks and LLM Mentions are pay-as-you-go like everything else; the old $100 monthly commitment is gone, and Backlinks rates rose 20%.
SEOs are catching on: searches for "dataforseo" grew five-fold in a year
US monthly Google searches, Oct 25 to Sep 26. Each card has its own scale.
Does Semrush get its data from DataForSEO?
I've heard the claim and couldn't confirm it, so I won't state it as fact. Semrush's data page says it partners with unnamed third-party providers to collect Google SERPs, uses a clickstream panel for traffic and its own crawler for backlinks. What is public: plenty of SEO tools openly run on DataForSEO, like SEO Utils, which has no keyword or backlink database of its own.
Can Claude + DataForSEO really replace Semrush?
For most day-to-day jobs, yes, and the data for each one costs cents.
Here's the same work done both ways. The data costs are what DataForSEO charges at its published rates; Claude's work runs inside your subscription.
The everyday setup runs $540 to $756 a year. Semrush Guru is $2,999
Annual cost in USD at list prices.
What you give up is Semrush's polished interface, its clickstream traffic estimates, its deep history and set-and-forget projects. What you gain is an assistant that doesn't just show you the data but writes the report, the fix or the page from it.
| Capability | Claude + DataForSEO | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Volumes, SERPs, rankings, competitors, gaps | Yes | Yes |
| Backlinks and AI answer mentions | Yes (pay as you go) | Yes (higher tiers) |
| Traffic estimates | Estimated from rankings | Yes (clickstream) |
| Deep history and a polished UI | You build what you need | Yes |
| Writes the report, fix or page for you | Yes | No |
Which AI should you use?
Most of the big ones can do this. I recommend Claude.
ChatGPT's Codex, Gemini and others can all call an API and work through a crawl export. I use Claude, and the rest of this article focuses only on it. Three reasons:
SEO teams already lean on Claude, but only 26% connect a data API
Tools SEO teams use for AI work, up to three per respondent.
16 jobs to hand Claude this week
What can it actually do for me?
These come from my own client and site work and from what other SEOs and the AI labs are publishing. Each card has a prompt you can paste in and the data it needs. Where I've priced the job, the dark pill shows what Claude's tokens cost at API rates, from my test of 8 SEO jobs on every Claude model.
Keyword research
Keyword research and clustering
Pull volume, CPC and competition for a seed list, expand it with related ideas, then group everything by intent into clusters mapped to pages.
Striking-distance sweep
Find queries in positions 8 to 20 that already get impressions, then rewrite the titles and intros most likely to push them onto page one.
Competitor keyword gap
Every keyword two competitors rank for that you don't, filtered by volume and difficulty, with the page that should target each one.
Technical
Crawl audit to fix list
Hand Claude a Sitebulb or Screaming Frog export and get issues ranked by traffic at risk, not a 300-row warning list.
Migration redirect map
Match every old URL to its best new one by path, title and content, output the redirect file, then test it for chains and 404s.
Schema at scale
Generate JSON-LD for every template from the page content, then validate it before it ships.
AI crawler log check
Have Claude write a script that filters your server logs for GPTBot, ClaudeBot and OAI-SearchBot and shows which sections they read and which they skip.
Content and AI visibility
Brief from the live SERP
Read the current top 10, pull related questions and volumes, and produce a writer-ready brief with H2s, questions and internal links.
Bulk titles and meta descriptions
Rewrite titles and descriptions for every page at once, inside length limits and matched to each page's top query.
AI citation tracking
See how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity answer your money questions, which sites they cite, and track it monthly.
Original research studies
Test a hypothesis across real sites, collect the numbers, chart them and write it up. Linkable studies are where this setup shines.
Reporting
Weekly rank tracking
Check your keywords in the live SERP on a schedule and get a change report with winners, losers and new competitors.
GA4 reports on demand
Google's own Analytics MCP lets Claude run reports, funnels and realtime checks, then build the dashboard for you.
Paid vs organic overlap
Join Search Console, GA4 and Google Ads data to find terms you pay for while already ranking. One practitioner found 2,742 wasted-spend terms in about 90 seconds.
Ecommerce and local
Product listing audits
Score every product title and tag against real search volume and rewrite the weak ones. Works for Etsy, Shopify or any catalog export.
Local SERP checks
Pull live results for a specific city instead of the whole country to see who owns the local pack where your customers search.
Spotlight: ClaudeBot more than doubled its share of AI crawler traffic, from 9% to 20%
Share of AI crawler traffic, Cloudflare Radar, May 2026. Worth checking which of your pages these bots actually read.
How much time will it actually save?
Research and reporting that took most of a day now takes minutes.
The savings come from the pulling, sorting and formatting, the part of SEO that used to fill whole afternoons. In Keyword.com's 2026 survey, 89% of SEOs using AI save at least 4 hours a week, and a third save more than 10. How much you get back depends on how much of your week is that kind of work.
89% of SEOs using AI save at least 4 hours a week
Teams with AI central to delivery were far more likely to save 7+ hours (81%) than teams still testing it (11%).
The same jobs, manual vs with an agent
Time per task, log scale. Some are vendor claims, so treat them as a direction.
Which site crawler do you need?
Any real crawler will do. Claude alone only works for tiny sites.
Screaming Frog is free up to 500 URLs and $279 a year after that. Sitebulb starts at $18 a month. Either one catches what an AI reading page by page will miss: redirect chains, orphan pages, duplicate content and canonical conflicts across the whole site.
Claude can crawl a small site itself, but I wouldn't go past about 10 pages, and it won't be as thorough as a real crawler. Treat it as a spot check.
Claude can crawl about 10 pages. A real crawler handles the rest
How many pages each option handles comfortably, log scale. Arrows mean no fixed cap.
How do I connect Claude to DataForSEO?
Two ways. Both take about ten minutes.
- The MCP server. Add DataForSEO's hosted endpoint,
https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp, to Claude and authorize once in the browser. A local option runs withnpx dataforseo-mcp-server@latest. - A skill file. This is what I use. My API login sits in a
.envfile on my Mac, and a short skill tells Claude where it lives, which endpoints to use, to check my balance first and to report the cost of every job.
How the SEO agent works
You set the outcome and the rules. Claude pulls the data and hands back something you can ship.
Then give it a real job. This is the prompt that turns a crawl and a few cents of API calls into a Semrush-style audit:
Here's my Sitebulb export (internal_all.csv). Pull ranked keywords and search volume for every indexable URL from DataForSEO, then build one report: technical issues ranked by traffic at risk, pages in positions 8 to 20 worth pushing, and the 10 fixes to ship first. Report the API cost.
Five rules that keep it accurate and cheap
- Ask for the deliverable, not advice. "Build a keyword gap CSV and a one-page summary" beats "how should I find keyword gaps?"
- Keep keys out of the chat. Credentials live in a local file that Claude loads per call and never prints.
- Make it show its work. Raw numbers in a table, sources linked, API spend reported. If it can't cite it, it doesn't ship.
- Trim what you feed it. Cutting a Screaming Frog export from about 70 columns to 15 saves 52% of the tokens. More in my Claude cost breakdown.
- Save what worked. Every good run goes into the skill file, so next month the whole job is one line.
Run one month the other way.
Put $50 into DataForSEO, crawl your site with Sitebulb or the free Screaming Frog, and connect both to Claude. Give it three of the jobs above. Then compare the hours, and the invoice, to your Semrush month.

If AI can't find you, understand you and trust you, it won't recommend you.
Keywords tell you what they typed. Intent tells you what they meant. Fan-out tells you what they'll ask next.
Be a thing, not a string. AI remembers entities, not keywords.
The click isn't dead. It just has to be earned twice.
Schema is the business card you hand to every machine that reads your site.
If Googlebot can't reach it and AI can't parse it, it doesn't exist.
Good SEO grows quietly. Then all at once.
