A useful search strategy starts with the customer’s question. Someone may want a definition, a comparison, an explanation, a product recommendation, or enough evidence to make a purchase. The format of the result can change, but the business still needs to provide information that is discoverable, understandable, and credible. That process brings search engine optimization, answer engine optimization, and generative engine optimization into one strategy. A well-built page can attract an organic visit, supply a direct answer, and support an AI-generated response. Each outcome deserves attention, and each requires its own measurement.
SEO helps people discover relevant pages. AEO helps them find clear answers. GEO focuses on whether generative systems include, cite, or accurately represent your information. The shared foundation is useful, accessible content backed by evidence.

1 What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO, AEO, and GEO describe overlapping areas of search work with different immediate outcomes. Treating them as useful planning categories helps teams assign work and evaluate results. Their boundaries are not universal technical standards.

Three disciplines, one content foundation

For Google specifically, the company says its generative search experiences remain grounded in its existing search and quality systems. It considers this optimization part of SEO. That gives teams a reason to retain their technical and editorial foundations while adding AI-specific observation. Google’s generative AI optimization guide. Consider a company selling project-management software. Its product page should clearly describe capabilities and limitations. A comparison page should explain which teams benefit from each option. Its help center should resolve actual setup questions. Those assets can serve different discovery experiences without requiring a separate website or a near-duplicate page for every phrasing.

2 Why organic rankings and AI citations are different outcomes

A strong ranking for a question does not guarantee that a generated answer will cite the same URL. A ranking report describes one result set. A citation report describes the sources a particular generated response displayed. Mixing those observations can hide both opportunities and problems. Google explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may perform additional related searches through a technique called query fan-out. Their models and methods can also differ, producing different responses and supporting links. Google’s explanation of AI search features. The infographic also juxtaposes earlier Ahrefs findings and BrightEdge’s roughly 17% overlap estimate. Ahrefs changed its parsing methodology; BrightEdge used its own tracked queries and reported substantial differences across industries. For a content team, the implication is to inspect both outcomes. A page may rank well yet rarely be cited. A cited page may explain a narrow subtopic that the main commercial page barely covers. Investigate what the selected passage contributes before deciding whether the gap requires a rewrite, stronger evidence, or a new resource.

3 One search market, several AI search experiences

Perplexity: inspect the cited evidence

For Perplexity, start with the visible citations on questions that matter to your customers. Record the exact pages, the claims those pages support, and the kinds of sources appearing repeatedly. A discussion thread answering a practical compatibility question serves a different purpose from a manufacturer’s specification sheet. The historical Profound data in the infographic shows why source categories deserve attention. It also illustrates how easy it is to exaggerate a finding by changing the denominator.

Reddit’s 46.7% figure describes its share inside Perplexity’s ten leading sources; its overall share was 6.6%. Wikipedia’s equivalent ChatGPT figures were 47.9% and 7.8%. ChatGPT Search: distinguish search answers from other responses

A ChatGPT visibility test should record whether web search was used and whether the response showed citations. Also record the question, language, relevant location, date, and conversation context. Otherwise, two tests may measure different experiences while appearing comparable in a dashboard. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: similar answers can cite different sources

Ahrefs compared US results collected in September 2025 and reported 86% semantic similarity in its content analysis, alongside 13.7% cited-URL overlap in its citation analysis. Build related explanations into a coherent resource, then monitor which passages and URLs appear in each experience. If the content gives a strong overview but weak implementation detail, a comparison-oriented question may expose that weakness.

Gemini: treat the app as its own observation surface

Tinuiti’s Q1 2026 report found that Reddit represented 44% of January’s social-media citations in AI Overviews and 5% in Gemini. These figures concern social citations, not all citations. Its study used high-commercial-intent prompts across nine verticals, so the finding describes that test population. Tinuiti’s AI citation trends report. Shared ownership or model branding does not make product-level observations interchangeable. 4 Access: make important information reachable before optimizing it

The first audit is whether an intended reader or crawler can actually obtain the information. Strong writing cannot compensate for an inaccessible page, a blocked request, or a response containing only an empty application shell.

Inspect the initial response and the rendered page

Googlebot can process JavaScript through a rendering stage. Google nevertheless recommends server rendering or pre-rendering because it helps users and crawlers, and some bots cannot execute JavaScript. Google’s JavaScript SEO documentation. For important pages, compare the initial HTML with what appears in a browser. Check the main explanation, headings, specifications, prices, author details, internal links, and relevant structured data. If those details appear only after a click or a complex client-side interaction, investigate whether the search systems you care about can access them reliably.
This does not establish that every AI crawler has identical rendering capabilities. Treat vendor documentation and observed fetches as evidence, and avoid turning an undocumented capability into a universal claim that a bot can never render a page.

Separate discovery permissions from training preferences

OpenAI also distinguishes ChatGPT-User, used for certain user-triggered actions, from automatic search crawling. Perplexity describes PerplexityBot as a search crawler rather than a foundation-model training crawler. Give llms.txt an appropriate priority

The infographic presents llms.txt as an optional curated index. Google’s current guidance is more explicit for its own search service: Google Search ignores these files, so they do not improve its search visibility. Consider one only when a specific tool you use supports it. Google’s guidance on llms.txt. A public index also does not restrict access to the pages it lists. Treat access control, search eligibility, and convenience documentation as separate functions.

5 Answer: build useful sections that stand on their own

A reader should be able to understand a section without reconstructing essential context from the entire page. This is the practical value of the infographic’s passage-first approach: a definition, comparison, or explanation should remain clear when someone lands directly on it. That does not require fragmenting a useful article into tiny pages. Google says there is no special chunking requirement and no ideal page length for generative search. Use a repeatable section structure

Name the question. Use a heading that tells readers what the section resolves.

An example: replacing vague positioning with a usable answer

“Our flexible solution empowers teams to unlock productivity through seamless collaboration and powerful integrations.” The sentence leaves the reader to infer the product, its actual capabilities, and the situations in which those capabilities matter.
“A project-management platform brings task assignments, deadlines, and progress updates into a shared workspace. A small agency comparing platforms should check whether each option supports client access, recurring tasks, file approvals, and its existing billing workflow. Verify which features are included in the plan under consideration.”
The rewrite gives the reader a decision framework without inventing product specifications. On a real product page, replace the generic explanation with verified capabilities and links to the documentation or plan details that support them. For a service business, the equivalent passage should define the service, the customer it helps, the location covered, what is included, and what must be assessed before quoting. For a research article, it should identify the population, method, result, and limitation. Use one substantial page when the questions belong to the same task. Create a separate resource when a distinct audience or decision needs enough depth to justify it. Internal links should make that relationship clear.

6 Prove: make every important claim inspectable

Evidence improves an article when it helps the reader evaluate a specific statement. A reference list at the bottom cannot repair a misleading claim at the top. Place the relevant evidence next to the number, comparison, or conclusion it supports. The original GEO research by Aggarwal and colleagues used a 10,000-query benchmark. Its leading methods, including source citations, quotations, and statistics, produced measurable visibility gains on that benchmark. The lower-ranked-source experiment matters: the study does not support promising a positive lift at every starting position. Study results and limitations. Apply the editorial lesson by documenting evidence properly. A customer survey should state who responded and when. A performance comparison should explain the setup. An expert quotation should identify the speaker and relevant experience. A statistic should identify its denominator and observation window. For original research, publish enough methodology for someone to judge whether the result applies to their situation. For practical expertise, include the steps taken, the conditions observed, and what did not work. A clear explanation of a limitation can make a source more useful than a larger unsupported claim.
Narrow the statement or present it as a hypothesis to test. Adding an unrelated statistic simply because statistics performed well in a benchmark weakens the article’s reasoning.

7 Connect: explain who you are and how the information fits together

Entity clarity means identifying the people, organizations, products, and concepts involved without leaving avoidable ambiguity. A page about an organization should make its name, role, and relationship to the site explicit. An article should show who wrote it and who publishes it. Start with visible content. Use consistent business names and accurate descriptions. Give authors biographies that explain relevant experience. Link to the actual product, service, or research being discussed. If a company changes its name or a service changes its scope, update the places that customers use to verify those facts.

Match the implementation to the documented purpose of each type. A normal article is not automatically a ProfilePage merely because it has a byline. Likewise, a publisher’s identity belongs in the appropriate organization data rather than being improvised differently on every article. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results beginning May 7, 2026. A well-written FAQ can still help readers, but it should not be sold as an automatic rich-result opportunity. Google’s search documentation changelog.
In WordPress, inspect what the theme and SEO plugin already generate before adding more markup. Confirm that the byline, publication dates, organization identity, and canonical page all describe the same article. Resolve conflicting information at its source.

8 Build a credible presence beyond your own website

Your own website should provide the clearest account of your offering, while independent sources give readers additional ways to evaluate it. A useful review, a conference presentation, a customer example, or a specialist publication can explain aspects of a business that its homepage cannot establish alone. Ahrefs’ May 2025 brand study found a stronger association between branded web mentions and brand mentions in AI Overviews than between backlink counts and those AI mentions.

The study began with 75,000 brands and excluded those without AI Overview mentions from the correlation analysis. Its result concerns brand visibility, which is not the same as citations to a brand’s own URLs. Share a documented experiment with a specialist publication. Contribute an accurate answer to a community discussion. Create a demonstration that resolves a recurring objection. Help customers describe their experiences accurately, including limitations.
A placement earns its place when it adds useful, credible information about the business. Repeating the brand name across low-value pages gives a team an activity count without establishing whether customers learned anything or whether search visibility improved.

9 Keep information current without confusing age with quality

Freshness is meaningful when the underlying information has changed. Prices, product capabilities, regulations, software interfaces, and research findings age differently. Set review schedules around those differences.

10 Measure visibility, accuracy, and business outcomes separately

A useful GEO dashboard distinguishes what an answer says, which source it links to, and what the business receives afterward. A mention can occur without a link. A citation can support a claim without recommending the company. A recommendation can be inaccurate. Each observation tells a different story.

These are proposed operational definitions for a repeatable audit. Document whether repeated links within an answer count once or multiple times, how citations are assigned to domains, and how failed runs are handled. Record technical failures separately; keep valid answers without mentions or citations in the relevant denominator.

That does not mean the company received 14% of all citations. A single answer may contain several links. These numbers are illustrative arithmetic, not an industry benchmark.

Build a stable question set

Start with a manageable sample of questions drawn from customer interviews, search queries, sales objections, and support requests. Cover discovery, comparison, validation, and action. Separate branded questions from questions that never mention the company. Keep a baseline set unchanged long enough to compare repeated observations. Record the platform, experience, model where visible, date, geography, language, search status, and conversation context. Repeat queries across multiple runs to observe variation. Preserve the answer and exact citation URLs so that a later review can check what actually happened. Report the sample size alongside the percentage. A change from two appearances to three in ten responses is worth investigating, but it is weak evidence for a broad market shift. Group repeated observations by intent and product surface before interpreting the totals.

Google’s dedicated Generative AI performance report for Search now reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google documents worldwide rollout as of August 31, 2026. Its listed dimensions include pages, countries, dates, and devices. Use this report alongside ordinary Search performance and site analytics; an impression report alone does not establish AI-specific clicks or conversions. Business measurement also needs humility. Someone may learn about a company in an AI answer and return later by typing its name. Referral analytics may capture only part of that journey. Use customer-reported discovery and changes in branded demand as additional observations without assigning all of either change to GEO.

Turn observations into specific editorial decisions

If a platform repeatedly cites a competitor’s implementation guide, inspect the question that guide resolves. If answers misstate your pricing, verify the pricing page and other public sources. If a brand is mentioned but never linked, examine whether the cited third-party coverage is doing useful reputational work. If referrals arrive but fail to convert, review the landing page and offer. Each response should lead to a testable action. Keep the content change, publication date, and measurement window together. Where practical, compare revised pages with similar unchanged pages while acknowledging that platform changes and audience demand can affect both groups.

11 A 90-day roadmap for putting the framework to work

Sequence the work by dependency, business importance, and the quality of the evidence. Access problems can prevent useful content from being considered. Editorial improvements need a baseline to evaluate. Original research and credible distribution often require more time.

Choose the pages most closely connected to business value. Check their initial HTML, indexing status, crawl permissions, canonical URLs, and the relevant platform inclusion controls. Establish a prompt sample and capture the starting citation and mention patterns. Deliver a short list of verified blockers, a defined question set, and a page inventory. Give each issue an owner and an observable completion condition. “Important product specifications appear in the initial HTML” is easier to verify than “make the website AI-ready.”
Start with approximately 10 to 20 high-value pages if the team can review them properly; use fewer when resources are limited. Strengthen their direct answers, definitions, evidence, comparisons, and next steps. Correct author and organization information and inspect existing structured data. Prioritize pages that already address an important decision but leave a specific question unanswered. Preserve useful material and remove repetition that distracts from the decision.
Identify something the business can document that is difficult to obtain elsewhere: an experiment, an implementation lesson, an original dataset, a detailed comparison, or a well-supported customer example. Publish enough context for readers to evaluate it. Share that work through channels where the relevant audience already seeks information. Assign an owner to correcting outdated public profiles and a separate owner to building new evidence. Maintenance and research require different schedules.
Compare repeated observations with the baseline. Look for changes in question coverage, exact cited URLs, factual accuracy, referrals, and qualified conversions. Identify which changes have enough evidence to expand and which need more observation. Continue the useful work even if a platform’s citations vary. End the cycle with a documented decision for each priority page: maintain, revise further, expand supporting material, or investigate a technical issue.
