FAKE REVIEWS :: FIVE STARS, ZERO CUSTOMERS
STATUS: ACTIVE (law and platforms catching up) SCOPE: how fake reviews are made, detection, law, removal EVIDENCE: regulation and platform reports confirmed · broker methods practitioner-reported editorial revision 2026-11-02

Fake reviews are the oldest trust hack on the web and still one of the most effective. A few dozen five-star reviews can move a local business up the map pack, push a product into a marketplace's best-seller list, or bury a competitor under one-star attacks. This chapter covers how fake review operations run, the red flags that expose them on Google, Amazon and Trustpilot, the laws now aimed at them, and a checker you can run on any batch of reviews. The local SEO chapter covers how fake Google reviews feed map rankings.

1 · What counts as a fake review

The US Federal Trade Commission's rule on consumer reviews, which took effect in October 2024, is the clearest list. It bans: [1] confirmed

  • Reviews from people who don't exist (including AI-generated ones) or who never used the product.
  • Buying positive or negative reviews, meaning paying or rewarding for a particular sentiment.
  • Undisclosed reviews from company insiders.
  • Company-controlled "independent" review sites.
  • Review suppression through threats or intimidation.
  • Buying or selling fake followers and views to fake influence for a commercial purpose.

Violations can bring civil penalties of up to $51,744 each, as of the rule's adoption. [1] confirmed In the UK, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act banned fake reviews and concealed incentivized reviews from 6 April 2025, with guidance from the CMA. [2] confirmed

2 · How fake review operations work

Most fake reviews are not written by the business owner at 2am. They are bought from brokers who run the logistics. practitioner

Review bombingA burst of one-star reviews against a competitorLocal listings, apps, games
AI-written reviewsGenerated text, often posted through the same farmsEverywhere; now explicitly covered by the FTC rule

3 · How big the problem is

Platforms publish their own enforcement numbers. Google says it blocked or removed more than 240 million policy-violating reviews on Maps in 2024, and more than 292 million in 2025, along with over 13 million fake Business Profiles in 2025. [3] [4] confirmed These figures show the volume of attempts. They don't tell you how many fakes got through. interpretation

Shoppers lost a popular safety net in 2025 when Mozilla shut down Fakespot, the review-analysis service, as it refocused on Firefox. [5] confirmed No free replacement has the same reach yet, which is why the checker below exists.

4 · How to spot fake reviews

No single signal proves a review is fake. Look for several at once, across the whole set of reviews rather than one: practitioner

  • Timing bursts. Many five-star reviews in a few days, especially right after a launch or a run of bad reviews.
  • No specifics. "Great product, highly recommend!" with nothing about size, fit, staff, dates or problems.
  • Hype and repetition. Stacked superlatives, exclamation marks, and the same phrases in different reviews.
  • Reviewer history. Profiles that only post five stars, review businesses in many cities, or were created recently.
  • Rating shape. Lots of fives and ones with almost nothing in between.
  • Mismatches. A review describing a different product, a different location, or a service the business doesn't offer.
  • Incentives. "Received this free" or "in exchange for a review" without a clear disclosure.

Paste up to 200 reviews, separated by a blank line. The checker scores each one for hype, missing specifics, stock AI phrasing, undisclosed incentives and near-duplicate wording across the batch. It runs entirely in your browser.

5 · Google, Amazon and Trustpilot

PlatformHow to reportNotes
Google reviewsFlag the review in Maps or Search; business owners can report it from their Business Profile and track it in the review management toolGoogle removes reviews that break its policies, not reviews that are only negative [6]

TrustpilotFlag the review; businesses can report through their accountTrustpilot publishes consumer warnings on profiles it catches gaming reviews

6 · How to remove fake reviews on Google

  1. Document it. Screenshot each review with dates and reviewer names. Note why it is fake: no record of the customer, the wrong location, part of a burst.
  2. Report each review from your Business Profile, choosing the policy it breaks (for example spam, conflict of interest, off-topic). [6]
  3. Track the outcome in Google's review management tool and appeal once if a report is rejected.
  4. Reply calmly in public while you wait. Future customers read the response, not just the review.
  5. Escalate defamation or extortion ("pay us or the one-stars continue") through Google's legal removal request and, where appropriate, law enforcement.

Never answer a review attack by buying positive reviews. It breaks the same policies and, in the US and UK, the law. confirmed

7 · What experts get wrong

"Verified purchase means real." Rebate schemes produce verified purchases by design. practitioner

"AI detectors can catch AI reviews." Text-only detection is unreliable on short reviews. Patterns across accounts and timing are stronger evidence. interpretation

"A few fake reviews are harmless." They now carry legal risk for the business that buys them, not just platform risk. confirmed

"Google removes negative reviews if you ask." Only reviews that break policy. A genuine bad review stays. confirmed

Fake reviews: common questions

How can you tell if a review is fake?

Look for groups of signals: bursts of five-star reviews in a short window, no specific details, repeated phrases across reviewers, profiles that only post five stars, and undisclosed freebies. One signal alone is not proof.

Are fake reviews illegal?

In the US, the FTC's rule that took effect in October 2024 bans buying, selling and posting fake reviews, with civil penalties per violation. The UK banned fake reviews from 6 April 2025. Other countries have similar consumer-protection laws. This is not legal advice.

Is there a Fakespot alternative?

Mozilla shut Fakespot down in 2025. The checker on this page scores pasted reviews for common red flags in your browser; platforms themselves still hold the account and purchase data needed to prove a review is fake.

How do I remove fake reviews from Google?

Report each review from your Business Profile under the policy it breaks, track the decision in the review management tool, appeal if needed, and respond publicly while you wait.

Are Amazon reviews fake?

Most are not, but rebate schemes, review swaps and hijacked listings still slip through. Check for reviews describing a different product, sudden bursts, and generic five-star text.
